JoSAA Counselling 2026 — Step-by-Step Guide for JEE Main & Advanced

JoSAA counselling is where your JEE Main / JEE Advanced rank translates into an actual college seat. It's also where a lot of good ranks get wasted due to poor choice-filling strategy. This guide walks through registration, choice filling, the 6 allotment rounds, Float-Slide-Freeze mechanics, reporting and document verification — with common mistakes that cost people their preferred seats.

What Is JoSAA?

Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is the centralised counselling body for:

• 23 IITs (via JEE Advanced)
• 31 NITs (via JEE Main)
• 26 IIITs (via JEE Main)
• Government-Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) — 20+ CFTIs and other centres

All admissions to these 100+ institutes happen exclusively via JoSAA — no direct admission. Registration on the JoSAA portal is mandatory.

JoSAA 2026 Expected Timeline

• Mid-June 2026: Registration opens on josaa.nic.in (after JEE Advanced results)
• Mid-June: Choice filling window opens (~7 days)
• End of June: Round 1 seat allotment
• Early July: Round 2 allotment
• Mid-July: Round 3 allotment
• Late July: Round 4 allotment
• End of July / Early August: Round 5 allotment
• Mid-August: Round 6 (final) allotment
• After JoSAA ends: CSAB counselling for vacant seats at NITs/IIITs/GFTIs

Step-by-Step JoSAA Process

Step 1: Registration

Visit josaa.nic.in. Log in using JEE Main application number + password. JEE Advanced qualifiers also see their Advanced rank. Fill personal details, preferences for home state/other state (NITs have state reservation), upload certificates.

Step 2: Choice Filling

This is the most critical step. You can fill up to 700+ choices (all institute-branch combinations you're eligible for). Strategy:

• Reach Tier (top 20-30 choices): Branches slightly above your expected rank. Best case scenarios.
• Realistic Tier (middle 40-50 choices): Branches matching your rank. Most likely outcomes.
• Safety Tier (bottom 20-30 choices): Branches well below your rank. Guaranteed fallback.

Order choices strictly by preference. JoSAA allocates the HIGHEST preference that your rank qualifies for — so choice #1 must be your most desired option, #2 the next desired, etc.

Step 3: Round-by-Round Allotment

After each round, check your allotment status. You have three options:

• Float: Accept current allotment BUT remain in the running for higher-preference choices (better branch or institute) in subsequent rounds.
• Slide: Accept current allotment BUT remain in the running for higher-preference branches in the SAME institute.
• Freeze: Accept current allotment as final. No further upgrades. Proceed to document verification and fee payment.

Default strategy: Float in rounds 1-3 (maximise upgrade chance). Freeze only when you're satisfied with the allotment.

Step 4: Document Verification & Fee Payment

Once you Freeze (or at the final round), you must:

• Pay the provisional seat acceptance fee (~₹30,000–40,000)
• Upload documents for online verification
• Report to the allotted institute for in-person document verification on the scheduled date

Common JoSAA Mistakes That Cost Seats

1. Too few choices filled. Filling only 20-30 choices leaves you vulnerable to no allotment if ranks shift. Fill 80+.
2. Wrong preference order. Filling safety choices before reach choices. JoSAA honors your stated order — #1 must be most desired.
3. Freezing too early. Round 1 Freeze locks you out of better rounds 2-6 allotments. Default to Float or Slide unless perfectly satisfied.
4. Missing reporting deadlines. Each round has strict reporting deadlines. Miss one and your allotment is cancelled.
5. Ignoring category-specific choices. Reserved category candidates should fill both category-specific AND General choices to maximise options.
6. Paying fees at wrong stage. Provisional seat acceptance fee is different from academic fees. Don't confuse them or pay to non-JoSAA accounts.

Home State vs Other State Quota (NITs Only)

NITs have a Home State (HS) vs Other State (OS) split of approximately 50-50 (varies by NIT). If you're a domicile of a state, you're eligible for that NIT's HS quota (generally lower closing ranks). OS quota applies to candidates outside the NIT's state.

Key strategy: Check if your home state has an NIT. If yes, HS preference at that NIT is much easier to secure than OS at a top NIT.

After JoSAA — CSAB

After Round 6 of JoSAA, leftover seats at NITs, IIITs and GFTIs are filled via CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) special counselling. Typically 2 rounds in September-October. Useful if you're unhappy with your JoSAA allotment — you can withdraw from JoSAA before reporting and try CSAB.
