Common Mistakes That Cost Marks

  • Confusing commensalism and mutualism. Mutualism: both benefit (++). Commensalism: one benefits, other unaffected (+0). Different scoring in PYQs.
  • Wrong direction of pyramid of energy. Pyramid of energy is ALWAYS upright (energy decreases upward). Pyramid of numbers can be inverted; biomass can be inverted in aquatic ecosystems.
  • Calling all species-area relationships linear. Species-area is a power curve S = CA^z (log-log straight line, but not arithmetic linear). Slope z varies by system.
  • Treating ozone layer depletion as greenhouse effect. Two different problems. Ozone depletion (stratospheric, CFCs) vs greenhouse effect (tropospheric, CO₂/CH₄). Don't conflate.
  • Missing the 'productivity' vs 'biomass' distinction. Productivity = rate of biomass production (time-dependent). Biomass = current standing stock (snapshot). Different units.
