How to Solve Human Reproduction PYQs

Common Mistakes That Cost Marks
- Wrong chromosome number in secondary oocyte. Secondary oocyte is haploid (23 chromosomes), arrested in metaphase II until fertilisation. Not diploid.
- Confusing follicular and luteal phase hormones. Follicular phase: FSH dominant, estrogen rises. Luteal phase: LH initially, progesterone dominant.
- Placement of fertilisation. Fertilisation happens in the ampulla of the fallopian tube (not in the uterus). Implantation happens in the uterus. Different locations.
- Wrong timing of ovulation. Standard 28-day cycle: ovulation on day 14. In longer/shorter cycles, it's not always day 14 — ovulation is typically 14 days BEFORE next menstruation, not 14 days after.
- Treating placental hormones as maternal. hCG, hPL, relaxin — all produced by placenta, not by maternal glands. Pre-placental pregnancy hormones (LH, FSH) are maternal.
