Phylum Mollusca
Soft-bodied, muscular foot, mantle, radula (except bivalves), usually shell. Examples: Pila (apple snail), Octopus, Oyster, Chiton.
Phylum Echinodermata
Pentaradial symmetry (adults), water vascular system, tube feet, endoskeleton of calcareous plates. Examples: Starfish (Asterias), Sea urchin, Sea cucumber.
Phylum Chordata
Notochord, dorsal hollow nerve cord, pharyngeal gill slits, post-anal tail. Sub-phyla: Urochordata (tunicates), Cephalochordata (lancelets), Vertebrata.

How to Solve Animal Kingdom PYQs
- 1Build a phylum-feature table. For each of 10 phyla: key features, examples, symmetry, coelom type. NCERT Class 11 Ch 4 has this; make your own compact version.
- 2Memorise 5-10 examples per phylum. NCERT lists specific examples — memorise them. NTA often asks "which belongs to phylum X?" with the exact examples from NCERT.
- 3Symmetry types: radial vs bilateral. Cnidaria + Echinodermata (adults) = radial. Most others = bilateral. Porifera = asymmetrical (or radial).
- 4Coelom types: 3 categories. Acoelomate (no cavity: Platyhelminthes), Pseudocoelomate (false cavity: Aschelminthes), Coelomate (true cavity: Annelida onwards).
- 5For Chordata, know 4 defining features. Notochord + dorsal hollow nerve cord + pharyngeal gill slits + post-anal tail. All 4 must be present (at some stage) for chordate.
Common Mistakes That Cost Marks
- Calling earthworm an insect. Earthworm is Annelida (segmented worm). Insects are Arthropoda (jointed appendages, exoskeleton). Completely different phyla.
- Wrong scientific name. NCERT is strict on binomial names. Pheretima (earthworm), Periplaneta (cockroach), Taenia (tapeworm) — memorise genus names exactly.
- Treating Porifera as tissue level. Porifera is CELLULAR level (no tissues). Cnidaria is tissue level (diploblastic). Different organisation levels.
- Confusing open and closed circulation. Arthropoda + Mollusca = open (blood in haemocoel). Annelida + Chordata = closed (blood in vessels). Don't swap.
- Missing notochord in chordates. Notochord is defining feature of Chordata. In Vertebrata, it's replaced by vertebral column in adults. Embryonic notochord is still required.
