Common Mistakes That Cost Marks
- Confusing insulin and glucagon actions. Insulin lowers blood glucose (anabolic). Glucagon raises blood glucose (catabolic). Both from pancreas but opposite effects.
- Wrong direction of nerve impulse. Dendrites → cell body → axon. Axon carries impulse AWAY from cell body. Never reverse this.
- Applying counter-current to Breathing. Counter-current mechanism is for urine concentration in nephron. Breathing uses pressure gradients, not counter-current.
- Calling RBC "white blood cells". RBC = erythrocytes (red). WBC = leucocytes (white). RBC has no nucleus in mammals (except mature) — a distinguishing feature.
- Treating nodal tissue as nerve tissue. SA node is modified cardiac muscle, not nervous tissue. It initiates cardiac rhythm but is muscular in origin.
