Common Mistakes That Cost Marks

  • Confusing B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocytes. B-lymphocytes produce antibodies (humoral immunity). T-lymphocytes directly attack infected cells (cell-mediated). Different roles.
  • Treating AIDS as caused by bacteria. HIV is a RETROVIRUS. Not a bacterium. Reverse transcriptase converts RNA to DNA in host cell.
  • Wrong primary response duration. Primary immune response: slow, 1-2 weeks to peak. Secondary: rapid, hours to days, stronger. Don't reverse these.
  • Classifying cocaine as opioid. Cocaine is a coca alkaloid (stimulant). Heroin is an opioid (from opium poppy). Different classes, different effects.
  • Assuming benign tumours can metastasise. Only malignant tumours metastasise (spread to distant sites). Benign tumours are confined to original location.
